The Dance of Procrastination

December 2. Writing

What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it? (author: Leo Babauta)

Bloody hell, where do I start? Sometimes I feel my entire day is set up to keep me away from my writing — there are so many shiny things that catch my eye! Doing the Digital Detox definitely helped refine my focus while I’m online and I’m trying to reduce time spent on the interwebs so I can sink more deeply into the writing. But here’s my dilemma: my biz exists online and it’s important for me to be where my biz is; the secret is not getting sucked into the rabbit warren of links to links to links — that’s where I’m haemorrhaging time and energy. I tell myself it’s “research” and that I’m filling my inspiration cup, but that is, frankly, a load of crap. All I’m doing is the time honoured Dance of Procrastination and it’s gotta stop.

Tomorrow.

So until my book exists out there in the real world (this thought makes me want to do jumping jacks around the room) and I’m off doing my global book tour* I will be here, on this sofa, looking a bit perplexed as I type into my laptop. With the internet disabled.

For #Reverb10

* slight exaggeration.

I always feel much more comfortable doing this on Twitter than I do here on the blog, but here goes… Registration for the January session of Unravelling is opening this Saturday! Woot!

Reflecting on a year of change

The innovative (and very lovely) queen of social media, Gwen Bell, has put together a community project for December which I think you’re gonna love. According to the website, Reverb10 is “an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. The end of the year is an opportunity to reflect on what’s happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead. With Reverb 10, we’ll do both.

Sounds good, no? There’ll be daily prompts we can respond to with “a post on your blog, through a tweet, with photography, or however else you desire.” As this month is going to be a continuation of the last month for me–writing, writing and more writing–I’m going to use Reverb10 as a low-pressure way to reflect over the last year and think about what I want to achieve in the new year. I may not respond to every prompt (gotta save some writing juice for the big stuff) but it will be fun to see what everyone else blogs!

Would you like to join me? Head over to the site and add your name – nearly 1,000 people have already signed up!

December 1 One Word.

Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you? (author: Gwen Bell)

2010: For me 2010 has been all about OPENING. Opening my heart to let a little boy in, opening my arms to embrace new friends and opportunities, and opening my mind to what I am truly capable of creating. It’s been painful at times, but I guess all growth hurts a bit at the beginning. It’s been a year of opening and growing pains and walking more confidently in the world.

2011: I’ve already chosen my word for 2011, and I’m looking forward to writing about that on the last day of the year, so I’m choosing a different–but still connected– word today. LOVE. I truly hope, with all my healed heart, that there is (even) more love in my world in 2011.

There. I said it out loud :)

What word encapsulates your 2010?

In other news, I was interviewed by Tara over at The Organic Sister yesterday – I think it’s my most revealing interview to date…
