Like all new relationships, it takes time to get comfortable with each other. You don’t know how they take their coffee and they don’t know which side of the bed you prefer. You’re on your best behaviour at all times until things imperceptibly change and suddenly you’re holding hands all the time and finishing each other’s sentences. Plus you fancy the pants off each other…
That’s when the good stuff really starts to happen.
So I have been going on dates with Londontown — hanging out in Portobello, exploring Brick Lane and Columbia Road flower market, playing in Soho and the West End, jumping on the tube at odd hours of the afternoon to go find bookshops I Googled five minutes earlier. The tube is still a novelty and I thank my lucky stars that I don’t have to do the commute that I used to do. The invention of the iPhone and Google Maps has improved living here by one THOUSAND percent. Plus there’s been more sunny days than I had in Bath (what is it with west country weather?) and the flat is coming together nicely.
Suffice to say we are appear to be in the honeymoon stage of our relationship, Londontown and I. She’s wearing her best for me and I’m flirting my little heart out. There’s a list of stuff that isn’t so great, but i have these pink cartoon hearts in my eyes right now so I’m ignoring the list and just enjoying this phase while it lasts.
It’s true true love.
Love hearing this, Susannah. I lived in London for about 6 weeks during college and absolutely fell in love with it–though it did take some warming up to for me. Glad you’re having fun.
i’ve been on a few dates with london, and was always quite impressed. although it’s been quite a long while since i’ve rang her up and asked her out (over a decade in fact).
so very, very happy for you.
LOOOooooooooooove. happy sigh.
Oh, to see London town again! I love it! Where did you finally settle? Chiswick? Or closer to the center. I will live it vicariously though you! Congrats!
Closer to the centre :)
So happy for you!! That mug says it all. Guess what I’m reading with my coffee tonight? Your book! I was gifted with it this weekend for my birthday. It’s soul-beautiful.

Hurray! Much hand clapping here. I’m loving your photos x
I know what you mean..after 14 years living away from London, now whenever I go back we have small exciting love affairs. I drink it all in, I even love standing on a cold train platform and just watching the people come and go, wondering about their lives. Soon, I get to have 3 whole weeks there and I can’t wait!
I absolutely love this post. May your love affair continue to shine x
Reading this post makes me happy, as it’s wonderful to know that your move turned out to be so great and a very good idea at this stage of your life. Following one’s heart is the best thing one can do. Enjoy the pink cartoon hearts and your honeymoon! Wishing you a delightful marriage! xxx
PS: I am a big fan of light and little lights, so your photos make my eyes twinkle the same way a little child looks at the X-mas tree.
Love that cup!
I like your mug! And lights in Londontown!
Such a perfect metaphor. So happy for you!
Yay! Been to Stoke Newington yet? Go and have a meal at Rasa in Church Street (there’s one on either side of the road – the veggie one on the south side is the best). If you go at the weekend you can have lunch rather than dinner and catch Abney Park Cemetery with daylight for photos.
You are making me fall in love, too, with those pictures! So glad you are enjoying it. What a wonderful time of year to start being back in the city…twinkly lights can help make any honeymoon just a little bit brighter.
I love the way you talk about your new relationship with London. How fun to be dating, and what a great place to do it!
I had a great weekend fling with London last autumn. One of my favorite afternoons included discovering Lutyens & Rubinstein Books and Other Necessities with the delightful, bookish scent collection. Filled with delight, I picked up a copy of Oh Comely magazine and had a cappuccino and scone across the street. It was a hot date with my Muse, with London serving as the perfect chaperone.
Thanks for sharing your delight with us.
Dear Susannah
I love how you describe your experience exploring London. And your photos are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and photos with us :) .
wow. Can’t believe that just two nights ago I saw the same lights for Christmas on Oxford with my daughter–a Christmas present from my husband after caring for him for the past two years. So glad to have this pic and re-connection as a past year Unralling alum. Happy new flat, Happy New Year!
