Eight books to read while you’re sick

Actually, the title of this post is a bit misleading — these are simply the books I’ve been dipping into while I’ve been sick. It’s been an unseasonably warm bank holiday weekend, and those are the ones that tend to make me a bit maudlin, as if i can hear the laughter of happy couples and families frolicking in the spring sunshine while I’m on my tod. I’m definitely on the mend… just bored of being cooped up at home. Thank goddess for books, eh?

Decorate by Holly Becker & Joanna Copestick – I’m so proud of Holly! Her book is filled with super-inspiring homes and ideas, all shot by the fabulous Debi Treloar; it’s interiors porn for the likes of me!

Modern Vintage Style by Emily Chalmers – also shot by Debi Treloar, also super inspiring.

Bossypants by Tina Fey – I’ve only watched a few episodes of 30 Rock and I don’t know much about Fey, but, my goodness, her book is fantastic! Worth buying solely for the chapter devoted to her dad, Don Fey – hilarious!

Do the Work by Steven Pressfield – if you have a Kindle* you can download this for free from Amazon, which is exactly what i did. I’ve read Pressfield’s The War of Art countless times, and this new offering from Seth Godin’s Domino Project doesn’t disappoint.

Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson – I love her recipes and I love her photographs. Fact.

Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr – Kris is reminding me I need to start juicing again. Lots to think about…

The House by the Sea by May Sarton – this one is by my bed. Love me a bit of May when i’m feeling my solitude.

The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obrecht – I hadn’t read any of the reviews, just followed a link and downloaded a sample to my Kindle. And now I am hooked. In fact, I’m going to read some more when I’ve finished this post. Delicious magic realism.

* I’ve had my Kindle for a few months now, and I must admit I’m enjoying using it; being able to download a sample of a book is definitely encouraging more fiction purchases. But I’m still buying just as many real books, in part because most of the books I want are not available in the Kindle format, but mainly because I prefer to have the actual book in my hands. I like being able to skip ahead and flick through the pages, something I can’t do easily on a Kindle. I like writing with a pen in the margins, and turning down the corners of pages… I like the physicality of books. But for travelling and purchases I don’t feel the need to have on my shelf (Tina Fey’s book, for example; I’m loving it but don’t need it on paper) it’s ideal. I just wish more titles were available.

I have an iPad & just can’t bring myself to use the e-reader component of it b/c as you said, I love the physicality of books. Though, you make a good point about some books just not needing to be owned. I am waiting for The Tiger’s Wife to get on paperback so I can buy it. I love House by the Sea & May Sarton, and I have Crazy Sexy Diet waiting on my bookshelf to read, so I’m excited to see it on your list. Hope you’re feeling better!

great recommendations. I love may sarton, too. She articulates the joy and pitfalls of single life with such elegance and attention.

  5. Charlane Killough Griffith

Great picks. Will have to check them out. I understand the convenience of the Kindle but I still can’t get myself to forgo the actual physical book. I’m not ready to give up on them, must we computerize everything?

Hope you are feeling better! I have the kindle and the iPad and between the two I prefer the iPad. I like the usability of the kindle app way better than the Kindle device.

But I still like paper books, especially the ones with gorgeous pictures like Holly’s.

Hi Susannah – great to see what you are reading and hope you are feeling stronger soon! I love May Sarton – enables you to go right inside that solitude and celebrate it even if you don’t have it! LOL :) Journal of a Solitude is a fave of mine. I’ve also read about The Tigers Wife and it was on my mental list and will be on my kindle later today.

I’m with you on the Kindle. I read different things there like history, people’s memoirs, new e-publishing authors, fellow blogger’s works, self-help books, social media how to’s and then books I want RIGHT NOW …but I still read loads of physically held books I can underline as well. I am enjoying them all and find the kindle just broadens the options. I want to investigate how to keep better track of all my reading. Goodreads? Dunno yet!
Go well today and feel strong! Terri xxoo
